Is a 30-Kilometre Park Really Coming to Durham Region? Here’s What’s Happening

 There’s been a lot of talk online about a new 30-kilometre park coming to Durham Region, stretching all the way from Pickering to Oshawa. And yes, it’s actually a real thing.

It’s called the Durham Meadoway, and the idea is to transform the existing hydro corridor that runs through Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa into one long, connected green space.

Think walking and cycling trails, natural areas, places to gather, public art and community spaces — basically taking land that already runs through a huge portion of Durham and making it something people can actually use and enjoy.

The full vision is pretty big. The Meadoway would stretch more than 30 kilometres from the Toronto-Pickering border all the way to Harmony Road in Oshawa. Along the way, it would connect 24 neighbourhoods and cross 26 creeks and valleys. Durham Region estimates around 114,000 people would live within a 20-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride of it.

So naturally, when photos started circulating showing beautiful trails, playgrounds and community gardens, it looked like Durham was about to get one massive new park.

Not quite.

The project is moving forward, but we’re still fairly early in the process. Durham completed its initial visioning work between 2021 and 2023, and the project has now received funding to move into the preliminary design stage. Durham Region and the municipalities of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa are also contributing a combined $1.2 million toward this stage of the project.

So those gorgeous pictures floating around online? They’re showing the vision for what the Meadoway could eventually become. It’s not a 30-kilometre park that’s already being built from one end of Durham to the other.

But it is a pretty exciting idea.

If you live in Durham, you probably already know parts of these hydro corridors. They cut through neighbourhoods all over the region, and some sections already have trails or green space around them. The bigger goal is to connect everything so you could eventually walk, run or bike along one continuous route through several Durham communities.

There’s still design work, planning and eventually construction to get through, so this isn’t something we’re going to wake up and see completed next summer.

But yes — the Durham Meadoway is real, funding is going toward moving the project forward, and the long-term plan really is for a 30+ kilometre connected green corridor from Pickering to Oshawa.

I’ll definitely be watching this one as it moves along, because if the finished project comes anywhere close to the vision, it could be a pretty amazing addition to Durham Region.
