World Cup Fever Has Reached Ajax. But Should It Change a Piece of History?
If you’ve spent any time in Ajax over the past week, you’ve probably noticed the excitement.
Canada is hosting the FIFA World Cup, local watch parties are drawing crowds, and Ajax native Derek Cornelius is representing his hometown on one of the biggest stages in sports.
Then I came across a comment that stopped me scrolling.
Someone suggested that Pat Bayly Square should be renamed after Derek Cornelius.
At first, I assumed I had missed a major announcement.
I hadn’t.
Pat Bayly Square remains Pat Bayly Square.
But the comment got me thinking about something bigger.
How do communities decide who deserves to be remembered?
And when a hometown athlete reaches the highest level of their sport, is that enough to rename a landmark that already honours someone else’s legacy?
Most residents know Pat Bayly Square as Ajax’s gathering place. It’s where people attend events, concerts, celebrations, and now World Cup watch parties.
What many newer residents may not know is that Pat Bayly wasn’t just a former mayor. He was Ajax’s first mayor and played an important role in shaping the community’s identity. The square was intentionally named after him when it opened as a way to honour that history.
On the other hand, Derek Cornelius represents a different kind of legacy.
He’s a local kid who grew up in Ajax and made it all the way to the World Cup. For young athletes across Durham Region, that’s a powerful story. It shows what’s possible when talent, hard work, and opportunity come together.
The interesting thing is that this doesn’t have to be an either-or conversation.
Honouring Derek Cornelius doesn’t necessarily mean erasing Pat Bayly.
Maybe there’s another way to recognize his achievements. A soccer field. A youth tournament. A community award. A public art installation. Something that celebrates what he’s accomplished while preserving a piece of Ajax history.
What makes this discussion fascinating is that both men helped put Ajax on the map in very different ways.
One helped build the community.
The other is helping introduce it to the world.
So what do you think?
Should Pat Bayly Square stay exactly as it is?
Should Ajax rename it for Derek Cornelius?
Or is there a better way to honour both legacies?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
